I'm gonna call $35,200 for a mildly loaded Wrangler Unlimited a nice price.

Kinja'd!!!

5-speed auto ($1,295), black hard top ($995), side steps ($495), Max Tow package ($745), Trac-Lok differential ($295)

Kinja'd!!!

UConnect 430 ($695), Slush-mats ($95), Alpine audio system ($595)

I'm trying to figure out where all those Alpine speakers go, there isn't much space for speakers on the parts of the car that are permanently attached.

Uconnect 430...gag me with a spoon...

It was that or 130. I'd rather have the hard-drive with it.

Girlfriend's Mom's Avenger has 430, it isn't terrible. Though it does freeze sometimes.

crack pipe if you ask me. You could get a well kept defender 90 for that.

A Defender 90 also comes with LR reliability though.

And I can't get an Alpine audio system...

I'd rather throw my Alpine deck in it to be honest. The Uconnect 5 is far, far superior, to say nothing of the 8.4 in my car. They don't even give you a knob for tuning with the 430, you're stuck using the touch screen or redundant controls if you want to change the station.

I'd use my phone or the hard-drive saved stuff 99% of the time, so a tuning knob is really needed. I know it's an outdated system, but it's tried and true that is works how it's designed.

Wow that got pricey pretty quick... for that price, you can have an Unlimited Rubicon with no additional options. And the side steps are completely useless, they're about even level with the floor.

As for the speakers, I wondered the same thing when I got my Wrangler. Two are mounted on top of the dashboard, one on either side. Another one is mounted by the steering wheel, to the left, under the vent. Another is on the opposite side of the cabin, by the glovebox. Two are in the "sound pods" integrated into the center rollbar. And with the seventh/last one is in the "trunk" area behind the rear seats. (I don't have the one in the trunk because mine wasn't optioned with the Alpine speakers.)

Eh I suppose, but you get a free year of Sirius so you have to get your money's worth out of that and the 430 is miserable when used as a radio. They should have found a way to get the 5 in there. As it is I'd rather have the base radio in the Wrangler, Caravan/T&C, Avenger, and I believe the Patriot/Cumpiss also get the 430? I absolutely love my 8.4, though even the 5 in my friend's Ram is very nice.

I go to a rich school, and all the rich kids get new Jeep Wranglers for their 16th birthdays. All the middle-class kids get 5-10 year old ones, and all those who can't afford that, go even older. Basically, you drive whatever the nicest Wrangler you can afford is. I was intrigued by this. Having never been in a Wrangler in my life, I could only assume that they were the most bouncy, uncomfortable, unsafe, and unrefined cars you could buy, and that them being the car of choice at my school was a classic example of high-schoolers putting image above all.

Finally, I asks my dad to go down to the Jeep dealer, so that I might finally drive one and see what it was like. I walked down the row of maybe 30 of them, and then pointed to the on I wanted to see, the one I thought best suited my taste. It was a red 2-door (I would've preferred an 4-door, but whatever) with carbon grey wheels and a caramel brown leather interior. This exact truck, only with a matching red top and fenders:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

And, like the Land Cruiser I saw a few days ago, I got a massive shock when the salesman told me the price: a little over forty two grand. My dad, somehow, managed to seem unfazed, and told the salesman that this was exactly how much he wanted to spend on me, because I was such a great kid. This being Omaha, the salesman probably thought I was Warren Buffett's grandkid. My dad even told him that he would like to bump the price up to $45,000 to get a 4-door. I have no idea how he kept a straight face, because the salesman was freaking out a little. Here was my dad, for no obvious reason saying that he was planning to spend 8x more on me than he did.

After all that, I still didn't love the thing. Yes it was very cool, and you could remove every body panel in summer, and it had a nice interior with lots of gadgets. But it still drove like crap on the road, which is where 99% of the Jeeps driven by my peers spend their whole life. It's a shame.

Shit, that was long. Sorry.

They're actually not terrible, there is nothing to fail except head gaskets, and for that much money they will have been done. Any 16 year old can point you to a shop that well sell you an alpine stereo system. And the defender comes with many more awesomes, and its loaded with metric freedoms, than the jeep. Not to mention rising value.

Personally, none of these three do anything for me. They scream "Rich suburban bro-dude" louder than a chromed, lifted Sierra Denali. They will never set foot off the pavement.

I'm so used to the unrefined mess that is the lifted, mud-tired Silverado, the Jeep would probably feel like driving a Rolls-Royce in comparison.

The power window switches (if equipped) in my opinion are more interestingly placed! They're on the center console between the two vents! Also, the map lights are mounted on the center rollbar as well.

That's Wrangler ergonomics for you. That's what happens when the roof and doors are removable and the windshield can fold down all the way.

I spent a couple weeks in the Woodlands, which is a filthy-rich semi-town near Houston. Rigs like this were everywhere down there and all of them looked like they had never seen a puddle in their life. The people we were staying with down there confirmed our suspicions.

I guess when you take the door off, the wires for the power windows and power locks have to come out too. I'm assuming an disconnect-able wiring harness is used?

More people have ranches in Dallas. I live just SW of Houston (in The Woodlands' biggest and better competitor suburb) and I see Jeeps with mud on them all the time.

The bad part about the gulf coast is that our mud will swallow almost everything that drives over it. Hell, go into the grass right off the road after a good rain and you'll probably sink to the axles immediately. Almost did that to my wife's Expedition last week.

Don't tell my wife that.

You got it! It is ridiculously easy, simply pull on the harness and it pops right out. This is probably currently the car with the worst security/anti-theft. If you left your doors unlocked, someone can hypothetically steal them. If you have a soft top (which I do), someone can easily unzip your side windows and rear windows and steal those as well, and perhaps the rest of the soft top if they were strong enough. On the second day of ownership of mine, I locked my keys inside. It literally took me 45 seconds to unzip a side window and break into my own car, so now I don't even bother to lock the doors. Oh one more thing, the hood doesn't lock so hypothetically if you needed a spare battery, these would be the easiest target. That's why I invested in a battery tie-down with locks.

The hardtop helps a lot and it's quite a popular option. As for the ones with the soft top (mine), I guess it's just up to the owners' judgement. I'm not too worried about theft, I added some anti-theft stuff like a tracker, but other than that it's really out of my control. Thank goodness I got one with a manual trans, which apparently is an anti-theft device in America. Oh and for JK's (2007-), Chrysler finally had the good idea to put chips in the keys. Screwdrivers no longer work!

Because I'm an engineer for Chrysler. If you want the legendary reliability of a Wrangler, get a manual. Or a TJ. Or a YJ. Or a CJ. Anything but an automatic JK.

I don't get how the transmission is so bad. Isn't it the same unit that goes in the SRT LX-platform cars?

Kinja'd!!! Andl > Logansteno: Bought a VW?
06/10/2014 at 00:58

Chrysler builds the W5A580 in Kokomo. Every transmission I have had the pleasure of dealing with that was build there has been miserably blown out by 50,000 miles.

I assume you'd purchase a Wrangler for different reasons than a 2008 SRT charger. They use a ZF sourced trans in LC/LD now I think. Way better quality, still feels like shit.
